Born in Dantzig in 1924, Oskar, a child astonishingly mature beyond his years, listens to the comments of those around him with lucid skepticism. At the age of three, he brutally stops growing by deliberating falling down the stairs. With his little drum that never leaves his side, Oskar sets the tempo to the twists and turns of his life and of history, from the rise of Nazism to World War II.
