PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL JURY WOS 2016
Muriel Coulin is a French filmmaker, born in Lorient in Brittany. She studied at the Louis Lumière School and began her career as director of photography for documentaries. In 1995, Muriel Coulin started making short films with her younger sister Delphine, a writer and head of documentary programmes at Arte.
In 2011, the sisters made their first feature film 17 filles : the story of 17 teenage girls who get pregnant at the same time, to escape their daily lives. In 2014, their second feature film as screenwriters, Samba, was adapted from the novel written by Delphine a few years earlier.
In 2016, they released their feature film, The Stopover (presented at WoS at a special screening) about two women soldiers returning from Afghanistan and the possible psychological consequences of war. This drama was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2016 where it won the Best Screenplay Award.
The Quiet Son, starring Benjamin Voisin and Vincent Lindon, is their latest feature film, released in 2025 and presented at the 81st Venice Film Festival, where Vincent Lindon received the Best Actor award.
