FRANCE AND ALGERIA AT WAR

Every film made about this war, which was to see France and Algeria divided from autumn 1954 to spring 1962, provokes a similar reaction: “Finally, French filmmakers are facing up to their history!” The supposed cowardice of French filmmakers is contrasted with the bravery of their American counterparts, who had what it took (and, by implication, still have what it takes) to confront their own history, in particular when it comes to denouncing the fiasco of the Vietnam War (e.g. The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket...). On the one hand, all of these films were shot after the Vietnam War had ended in 1975, and on the other, as Catherine Deneuve recently stated in So Film, “The Americans are a little too keen to settle their scores for it to be entirely genuine.”

Neither France no French cinematographers have shown themselves to be unworthy. Since the very beginning of the war, filmmakers such as René Vautier have risked their lives and eschewed censorship in order to let their cameras bear witness to the realities of what was a war in all but name. Be it Godard, Resnais, Cavalier, Enrico, Rozier, Demy, Varda in the 1960s, Vautier, Boisset, Heyneman in the 1970s, Schoendoerffer, Mordillat in the 1980s, Tavernier in the 1990s—and since the year 2000, Faucon, Herbiet, Siri, Charef and others—all have questioned this conflict its many repercussions. The wealth of fascinating documentaries and Algerian films presented here offers what is inevitably a subjective yet, we believe, representative overview of the depth, boldness and diversity of approaches. Why, then, are we left with a feeling that there is still something missing?
