FLEEING THE WAR

FLEEING THE WAR

Faced with imminent war, the arrival of armed forces, the prospect of becoming a victim of the conflict, civil populations flee, urged on by their instinct for survival. Each war, each battle is linked to an exodus. History is full of images of never-ending columns of entire families, carrying what they can and fleeing the crossfire. World War II was a watershed, with millions of Europeans forced into exile. Photographs and films have immortalised these images, permanently engraving them on our collective imagination.

Globalisation has dramatically reduced distances, and conflicts, however local they may be, are all too often the result of problems at a global level. Since 2011 the infernos in Syria and Iraq, and also many other parts of the world, have given rise to a previously unseen flow of people who, like our ancestors, will do anything to flee the hell of combat and get themselves and their families to safety.

Cinema has tackled this flight head on, this act of survival and the resulting exile. WOS has chosen to illustrate this recurring theme, now a constant in our daily lives, by presenting a selection of films about these tragic human and cinematic destinies: an artist fleeing the Nazis, a family from Milan escaping the bombings of World War II, African refugees attempting to reach Europe and migrants being treated at the hospital in Avicenne.

Dramas unceasingly created by Mankind, to which cinema bears witness so we may keep our eyes wide open.
