WAR IN SHORTS

With each passing year comes an unceasing number of short films infiltrated by warfare. We viewed over two hundred prior to making this selection which, more so than in previous years, sees animation is the predominant medium. These films are probably the freest in their form, yet perhaps the most audacious. As well as fictitious wars, Lebanon, Algeria, Indochina, Cambodia, the Great War, Ireland and current events are all dealt with through animation, providing a rarely conventional perspective. “Real-life” footage—as we might label it to distinguish it from animation—is also duly represented, whether in fiction or documentary. Some filmmakers have even taken a degree of risk, either straying into the territory of out-and-out comedy or opting for quirkier genres. We reach a point where war is simply a theme like any other and cinema, as it should always be, is the actual subject. Our selection features a number of directors that we hope to see in our feature competition in future years. Not that we see short films as a minor genre serving only as a springboard into feature length productions; on the contrary, short films will always have something to teach their feature-length counterparts.
