SHORT FILMS FROM THE PARIS 1 EDITING WORKSHOP (2018)

PRESENTED BY ANNA SZCZEPANSKA (PARIS 1), GILLES CIMENT (ECPAD) AND LUCIE MORICEAU-CHASTAGNER (ECPAD)

The Archive Editing Workshop of the University of Paris I originated from the desire to experiment with innovative connections between research and cinematographic writing. Second year Master students of History of the Cinema conduct their research via a film-montage, mostly edited from the photographic and cinematographic archives of the army (ECPAD).

THE FILMS

Captures by Anouk Phéline
(14’, ECPAD and private archives)

This film is dedicated to the memory of my grandfather, who spent his youth in captivity in a German camp for French officers during the Second World War. The snippets of his personal life – some notes, some portraits – resonate with the anonymous faces of prisoners captured on film and in photos at the time (the Wehrmacht and Allied forces archives). The capture of these men coincides with the capture of the images: can we escape these violent images by turning them into an homage?

La victoire est un point de départ (Victory is a starting point), by François Labitrie
(6’, ECPAD archives)

The victorious liberators travel through Italy to the Eternal City. Their journey is punctuated by encounters with ecstatic Italians demonstrating their happiness to the conqueror’s cameras. Yet behind this apparent joy, a strange anxiety seems to lurk…

Toubiba, by Juliette Delain
(18’, ECPAD archives)

In attendance of the director

During the Algerian War, two young women decide to join a female-only military corps of the French army: the itinerant medical and social teams.
