Journalist and documentary-maker Gordian Troeller made a number of trips to Eritrea between 1976 and 1992, during the Eritrean War of Independence against Ethiopia. Following its independence in 1993, between 1998 and 2000 Eritrea underwent a new period of conflict with its former occupier. Since then, its border with Ethiopia is controlled by the UN. In large part, Eritrean societal development is now held back by human losses and fear of a new conflict, although former fighters, mothers of soldiers and young war orphans are now beginning to speak openly about the war of independence and the process of women’s emancipation.
